How To Practice The Guitar
This is a short article with specific tips on how to practice the guitar. Practicing your guitar can be fun as well as productive.
PREPARE
Before you start to practicing the guitar, find a spot that is comfortable for you. Is your guitar tuned? Using a music stand is a great idea if you don’t already have the music memorized. Using a chair without arms is best. Is there a time of day where you can concentrate? Some people like practicing the guitar early mornings the best, or maybe in the evening after dinner.
It’s good to have no nails on your left hand and shaped nails on the right. Very fine sandpaper is good to use on your nails to polish the ends so they easily slide off the strings.
Prayer is an excellent way to start off your practice. In Scripture the Apostle Paul talks about praying without ceasing. Adding prayer is an important part of how to practice the guitar.
GOOD TECHNIQUE
It’s a good practice to warm up with guitar exercises to work on your technique. Guitar Scales are an excellent way to start. You can also try left-hand exercises. If you are just starting the guitar spend time practicing chord changes. You may want to check out our Christian Guitar Lessons. It’s a Christian guitar instructional course teaching how to play the guitar using worship songs.
PLAY YOUR SONG OR MUSIC
Once you’ve worked on warming up first, now you’re ready to try your song or songs. You’ll probably notice that some of the chord changes aren’t as easy for you, or it may be the strumming or finger picking pattern. Stop, pray, and isolate the areas that need extra work.
SPEND TIME ON SPECIFIC PARTS OF THE MUSIC
Instead of just playing a song from start to finish, it’s better to take the areas that are harder for you and play them over an over. You could try them 20 times or more. I found out that one famous guitarist would play the same passage for hours to make it perfect. You may not have that kind of time and your goal may not be the concert stage.
It still helps to work out specific areas of a song. Combine that with prayer and you’ll be seeing some great results.
PLAY THE MUSIC AGAIN
fter you’ve spent time with the areas that were rough, try the song from the top again. As you’re approaching chord changes or areas that were hard consciously Thank God for helping you play them smoothly. You may be pleasantly surprised.
